What do you think of first when somebody says the word San Francisco? Maybe the fine restaurants. Or the cable cars. Or the worlds crookedest street. But the city by the bay has so much more to offer the visitor. Youll discover lot to see and do while youre visiting this magnificent city.

One of the great things about San Francisco is that you can explore the city by foot nearly year round. The temperature is never too chilly for wandering outside and the city is so beautiful; a nice walk is the best transportation alternative to get an idea of all that The City (as it is known to the natives) has to offer. And, should you find yourself a little tired out from all that walking, you merely have to hitch a ride on one of San Frans famous cable cars until you reach your next destination. The cable car is unique to San Francisco, the city where the trolley originated, and is a perfect way to put yourself right into San Francisco culture.

And while youre checking out the city, take a trip down to Fishermans Wharf. Stop by Pier 39 and experience the culture and activities available there. Pier 39 is an exciting stop due to its great shopping center, which is filled with shops, games, and street artists. And if youre feeling adventurous, salute the other residents of the dockssea lions!easily spotted just off the pier. Fishermans Wharf is also the place for seafood lovers. While there are dozens of fun or elegant eateries to choose from, be sure to stop by Boudins and try their famous sourdough bread (you can see how its made!) and clam chowder. The Wharf area is simply brimming with activity; dont skip this must-see!

For the true flavor of San Francisco culture, get off the usual tourist path and see the local neighborhoods. From North Beach to Chinatown, each neighborhood offers an experience of its own that you wont find in any other city. The neighborhood of Haight-Ashbury is one of the highlights of San Francisco. Considered the Bohemian part of the city, this neighborhood is the birthplace of such musical legends as the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin. These artists have left their personal and artistic marks on this district. Haight-Ashbury also prides itself on some small but great local restaurants, bars and shops, including Amoeba Music, a music store that was once a bowling alley. Here you can locate almost any type of music you can imagine, with a great choice of old-fashioned, vinyl for the true audiophile. And just a short distance from this district is also located the Golden Gate Parka huge, gorgeous park that reminds one of New Yorks Central Park.

Chinatown is one of the most bustling areas of San Francisco. A walk down any of its narrow streets or alleys will include delicious aromas wafting from home kitchens and the many tempting restaurants. Meanwhile, your ears can feast on the sounds of Mandarin mixed with occasional English as you move past cluttered stores. Its like a trip into an exotic culture within an exotic culture.

So while planning your San Francisco get-away, make sure your itinerary takes you off the beaten path. The city offers unique adventures everywhere you turn. Immerse yourself in the culture of the city to get the most out of your trip!
